Notre Dame Play School, Kenya
As Sisters of Notre Dame, our mission to our beloved pupils in Syokimau is to incarnate the love of our good and provident God. In fidelity to our charism we participate in the mission of Jesus Christ, witnessing God’s goodness and provident care to others. After seeing the poor grounds our pupils were playing in, we found it a major task for us to seek for help to make the environment conducive for learning. This has been achieved through the generous support from Hilton Fund for Sisters.
The project for play equipment and landscaping addressed a range of specific needs that go beyond aesthetics. The funding of play equipment and landscaping at Notre Dame Pre-primary School Syokimau has definitely brought about several positive transformations. These include:
Care for mother earth: The new space is child friendly and is now free from stagnated water which was a breeding place for insects especially mosquitoes which pose health risks.
Enhanced Physical Environment: The landscaped areas and structured play zones have created a more inviting and child-friendly atmosphere, contributing to a sense of pride and belonging among pupils and staff. The former dusty and muddy grounds were very stressful and have very often caused absenteeism for students or postponement of planned school activities e.g. preschool sports day for 2023.
Improved Student Well-being: Access to quality play equipment has supported physical development, reduced stress, and encouraged social interaction which is very important in early childhood education.
Increased Enrolment: Our preschool compound is now well-maintained and visually appealing. This has definitely attracted prospective families, positioning the school as a nurturing and forward-thinking institution. As a matter of fact, the enrolment in this section has grown from 220 pupils in 2024 to 270 pupils in 2025
Competency Based Education (CBC) Integration: Kenya’s new CBC education system has been fully embraced through our new space. Outdoor learning opportunities which are highly promoted in CBC have expanded, allowing teachers to incorporate physical education, environmental awareness, and creative play into the curriculum more effectively.
