This year, the Patna Province’s Laudato Si’ Committee is publishing prayer services to support their goal of connecting with ecological spirituality. You are invited to use this prayer service for your personal prayer time or in community.

“Cultivate a Green Heart” (Focusing on Planting Trees with Values)

  1. Entrance Hymn

(“All Things Bright and Beautiful” or any creation-themed hymn)

  1. Introduction

Leader:
Today we gather to pray for a Green Heart — a heart that loves nature, respects creation, and takes responsibility for protecting our Earth. Planting a tree is not just an action; it is a promise. A promise of hope, life, patience, and care for future generations.

As we plant trees, may we also plant good values in our hearts — kindness, responsibility, gratitude, and respect.

  1. Opening Prayer

Leader:
Loving Creator God,
You created the earth with beauty and wisdom. You filled it with trees that give shade, fruits, oxygen, and shelter. Teach us to love and protect Your creation. Help us to cultivate green hearts — hearts that grow in compassion, responsibility, and care for the environment.

Bless our efforts as we plant trees today. May they grow strong and remind us to grow in goodness and virtue. We ask this in Your holy name.
All: Amen.

  1. Scripture Reading

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 1: 11-13, 2:15

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

“Then the Lord God took the man and the woman and put them in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.”

Reader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

  1. Reflection: If There Were No Trees on the Earth

Imagine waking up one morning to a world without trees. No tall green forests, no shady mango trees in the village courtyard, no rustling leaves in the wind. The earth would look empty, dry, and lifeless.

If there were no trees, the air we breathe would slowly become impure. Trees give us oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Without them, the balance of nature would be disturbed. The earth would become hotter each year, and climate change would worsen. There would be no cool shade on hot summer days, no shelter from strong winds, and no protection from floods.

Animals and birds would lose their homes. Nests would disappear. Forest creatures would have nowhere to live. Many species would become extinct. The sweet songs of birds and the playful movements of squirrels would fade into silence.

Without trees, the soil would lose its strength. There would be more landslides and soil erosion. Rivers would dry up because trees help in maintaining the water cycle. Rainfall would reduce, and droughts would increase. Farming would become difficult, and food would become scarce.

Human life would also suffer greatly. We get fruits, medicines, wood, paper, and many daily necessities from trees. Our houses, furniture, books, and even some of our clothes depend on them. Without trees, life would be uncomfortable and incomplete.

But beyond all physical needs, trees give us beauty and peace. Sitting under a tree brings calmness to the mind. Trees remind us of patience, generosity, and silent service. They give without expecting anything in return.

A world without trees would not just be environmentally poor—it would be spiritually empty. Therefore, we must protect and plant trees. Every sapling we plant is a step toward hope, life, and a greener future.

Let us value trees, care for them, and remember: when we save trees, we save ourselves.

  1. Reflection

Leader:
God entrusted the earth to us. We are not owners; we are caretakers.

A tree teaches us many values:

  •  Patience – It grows slowly but steadily.
  •  Generosity – It gives fruits and shade freely.
  •  Strength – It stands firm in storms.
  •  Humility – It bends with the wind.
  •  Service – It supports life around it.

When we plant a tree, we plant hope. When we care for nature, we care for humanity.

Let us ask ourselves:

  • Do my daily choices reflect that I am a caretaker?
  • In what ways have I failed in this responsibility?
  • What small, practical steps can I take today to care for the earth better?
  • How can I inspire others to see the earth as a sacred trust?

(Sacred trust means we should treat the earth with love, respect, and responsibility, because it is not truly ours—it is entrusted to us.)

A green heart is a grateful heart. May I cultivate a green heart!

  1. TIME FOR SHARING after the reflection
  1. Symbolic Action (Optional Tree Planting Ceremony)

(As a sapling is brought forward)

Leader:
This sapling represents our commitment to nurture both nature and values.

Each community member may say aloud a value one desires to cultivate in their life (e.g., kindness, honesty, patience, responsibility) and then place soil or water the plant.

Leader:
May this tree grow strong, and may our values grow stronger each day.

  1. Prayer of the Faithful

Response: O God, help us cultivate green hearts.

  1. For the Church, that it may continue to guide people to respect and protect creation.
    – We pray to our God.
  2. For leaders of nations, that they may make wise decisions to protect forests and natural resources.
  3. For farmers and environmental workers, that God may bless their hard work.
  4. For all of us gathered here, that we may plant more trees and reduce pollution.
  1. For future generations, that they may inherit a greener and healthier earth.
  2. Closing Prayer

Leader:
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of trees and the beauty of creation.
Make us responsible caretakers of the Earth. May our hands plant trees,
May our hearts plant goodness, And may our lives bear fruits of love and service.

Bless this tree we plant today.
Bless our community.
Bless our Earth. We make this prayer in the name of our God!

All: Amen.
